What is a wall-mounted garage door opener?

There are many things you have to think about when building a new garage; size, door type, insulation, weather stripping, windows, lighting, and finally, the door opener.

If your garage has plenty of space over the garage door you might want to consider installing a wall-mounted (AKA Jackshaft) door opener.

While the traditional (and most common) garage door openers are installed centrally over the garage door, a wall-mounted door opener is installed beside the door. This type of door opener is designed to be used in certain applications, such as garages with high or cathedral ceilings, and in garages where homeowners require more storage space.

The wall-mounted type is just as safe as the trolley type, it comes equipped with a photoelectric reversal system and a Security+ 2.0 remote system that uses rolling codes. Jackshaft openers also come with a 3-button wall-mounted control panel, and are compatible with MyQ so you can control your garage door from your laptop, smartphone or tablet.

However, wall-mounted door openers are not for everyone!

To install a wall-mounted door opener, you need to have enough space (at least 8 inches on one side of the door and floor-to-ceiling distance of at least 10ft). They are also ideal for garages with cathedral or sloped ceilings. Secondly, if you have torsion hardware, the springs will have to be held in a solid shaft as opposed to a hollow tube.

If you have enough space, a wall-mounted door opener really is the best choice. While you could go with a trolley door opener, the motor unit would have to be hung at least 2 ft. from the ceiling, and you would need long L-brackets and slotted steel angles to support it, which would take up a lot of space. Finally, the vibrations from the door opener would loosen these supports over time, eventually reducing the safety of the installation and potentially posing a safety issue.

They are more expensive…

But they are a worthwhile investment. Don’t forget, garages can be dangerous places, so if it only costs you an extra $150 to $175 to purchase a wall-mounted door opener (the price difference between the 8355 and the 8500), that’s money well-spent ensuring your family’s safety.
