Your Smartphone Can Open Your Garage Door

Have you ever wondered if you might have left your garage door open after you’ve been settled into your cubicle for an hour or so? Have you ever wanted to open your garage door with your phone rather than trying to find another remote?

Not all door openers work with a smartphone

Fortunately, you will find that many door openers – but not all – can be controlled when you are using a smartphone. Some of the most popular companies, such as LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman can offer this option. If you have a door opener that’s not from one of those brands, you can read this information to see if yours might be compatible.

It was in 1998 that Chamberlain, along with their brands LiftMaster and Craftsman, began to offer the SECURITY+ system. If the door is never than that, there is a good chance that it will be compatible.

Of course, you may not know or remember when the door opener was installed. You can simply look at the motor’s metal housing. If it was made after 1998, it will have Security+ or Security+ 2.0 written on it. If it was made after 2012, it will have the MyQ logo. You can also look for a button on the opener that could be labeled “Learn”. It will typically be either a yellow circle or square, or a purple square. You may also see a sticker on the motor that will provide you with the model number, as well as when it was manufactured.

Your door opener is post 1998

If you have a door opener that is made after 1998, you will then want to take a stepladder to look at the color of the learn button. If the color is orange, the opener was equipped with the Security+ system, and it was made sometime between 1996 and 2005. If it is purple, it has the same system, but it was made between 2006 and 2014. Those that were made after August 2012 will have a yellow button, and it will have the Security+ 2.0 system. In mid‑2017, the WiFi has been added to the system, and the button remained yellow.

Opening the door

With a qualifying door opener, you can use the MyQTM app. If you have an opener that has only Security+, you will need to have some accessories to get set up. These include an 888LM wall control panel, which comes with the 8500C model, as well as one Internet Gateway (828LM). If you have a door opener with Security+ 2.0 and MyQ, then you will only need the Internet Gateway (828LM).

Since August 2017, openers from Chamberlain and LiftMaster have had MyQ technology installed along with integrated wireless connectivity. With this type of system, it is even possible to add some other devices, such as lighting. They will also work with other smart home tech, such as Apple HomeKit and Google Home.
