Turn Your Garage Into A Scrapbooking Refuge

Turn your garage into a scrapbooking refuge

We tend to think of the garage only as a place to secure our vehicles and store unwanted belongings. This space holds so much more potential than that, so don’t let it to go to waste. If you enjoy scrapbooking, you can turn the garage into your own workshop.

As you get started, it helps to have a detailed checklist to make sure the job is done right. Take the following information as you start the planning process, and you will be on your way to enjoying your new workshop in no time at all.

Do this before you get started

Here are some areas that you will want to focus on in order to get the workshop that you really desire.

  • Lighting

This is perhaps the most important component of a scrapbooking workshop, as you need adequate lighting in order to see what you are working on. This is also important from a health perspective, as poor lighting can lead to headaches if you are not careful. Within your workshop, overhead lighting can be effective, as can lights from your worktable. If you enjoy doing your hobby at night, it is even more important to invest in having a quality lighting system installed for you. During the day, you might prefer to use the natural light from the windows to enjoy your scrapbooking activities.

  • Electricity

Not all garages were built with practicality in mind, so you might find that you are lacking in electrical outlets. That is ok, as it is an easy enough situation to solve. Just find a qualified electrician and go over where to add some strategically placed outlets to help in the creation of your shop. Keep in mind that you will not want to overload your electrical sockets, so avoid trying to connect too many devices all at once. Stay away from using an electrical tool that has a cord in excess of 5 feet, as this creates a safety hazard. To keep the workshop safe, place all exposed cords under a mat.

  • Worktable

Naturally, you will want a great table to do your scrapbooking on. The best table is one that is easily managed and is well suited to what you are doing. The surface area should be a minimum of three square feet, and you will want one that has a smooth surface in order to be more easily cleaned.

  • Worktable

Since it is best to keep your worktable free from clutter, you will want adequate and accessible shelves and storage space to handle all of your many materials. Scrapbookers do tend to collect a lot of material, all of it being useful at some point or another, so focus on creating a storage area that allows you to see everything at a glance. You can either choose open or closed shelving units depending on your preference. Consider what your budget is and the design the space accordingly.

Before you do go out and buy your shelves and closets, make sure that you measure the space that you have available. Draw out a sketch so that you will have it handy when you go shopping.

  • Your Work Chair

While you might stand a great deal of the time when you scrapbook, you will be sitting much of the time as well. Do your back a favor and invest in a chair that fits your body. It should be adjustable and it should swivel around so that you can easily access your material.

  • Flooring

As you consider the flooring in your workshop, look for something that is comfortable and allows you to move around in your chair quite easily.

  • Heating and Ventilation

Not all garages are made for humans to be in them for long periods of time, so they can get hot and stuffy at times. Make sure that you have adequate insulation and that you are well protected on those cold days of winter. It is also important to have proper ventilation, particularly if you plan on using many aerosol based products.

Depending on your own personal preferences in designing your scrapbooking workshop, you may want to add a few items to this checklist. The key is to take it slow and be methodical in your planning so that you arrive at the area you have been dreaming of.
